of displeasure, I caused Mr. Remedios to be informed
that in the Harbour Office he would not earn the yearly
increment of $60 which he would have obtained had he re-
mained in the Colonial Secretary's Office.

Thereupon on the 15th. ultimo, Mr.
J. A. dos Remedios tendered his resignation, which I
accepted with effect from the 23rd. vltimo. At the same
time Mr. Almada e Castro, who found the long hours of
work at the Colonial Secretary's Office and especially
the work after nightfall, very trying to his eyesight,
applied to be re-transferred to his former post of 1st.
Clerk of the Imports and Exports Office. I granted Mr.
Almada's request, and provisionally appointed Mr. R. H.
A. Craig, Clerk in charge of the Printing Department at
Victoria Gaol, to be registration clerk at the Colonial
Secretary's Office with a salary of $60 a month. Mr.
Craig, though greatly hampered by the faults of his
predecessor, is giving satisfaction.

The vacancy in the Gaol Department,
I filled by transferring Mr. E. J. do Rozario to that
post at a salary of $50 a month. Mr. E. Rozario's work
had not been good, and though painstaking, he was not
qualified to discharge his duties in the Colonial
Secretary's Office. It was on his own request that I
authorized the transfer.
